Layoff Rumors Swirling Among IBM Employees

The rumor mill is churning, and the potential for layoffs at IBM is fueling it. The Job Cuts Comments page on the website of Alliance@IBM, the IBM Employees' Union, is loaded with comments since December about possible job cuts, focusing on U.S. operations.

The speculation has the website wagging with rumors and some possible nuggets of truth, plus a big dose of fear. Many of the comments suggest January 23 as the notification day for layoffs, but others question that logic because IBM plans to release its annual financial statements a few days before that. Some of the comments speak of thousands of layoffs--as many as 16,000--in a "sweeping resource action" (RA) that will hit all divisions.

Regardless, I contacted IBM to see if the company could provide any information, and a spokesperson says IBM doesn't comment on speculation. Go figure.

Unfortunately offshoring isn't going away any time soon and until tech employees band together in a united front and use ALL means available to get our government to level the playing field for tech jobs so that hiring the h1b or outsourcing to whereever isn't the cheap way out we will continue to lose the very jobs that would help end this recession. IBM is but one of the many companies going this route - what really frosts me is bailing out companys that offshore like Chrysler and use the very tax dollars from (us and) those laid off by Chysler to fund their bailout.

Join the club, we were purchased by a larger company and by this fall the Iseries as well as myself are both being kicked out the door. The outlook for Iseries RPG jobs looks grim when you only see two or three RPG jobs but hundreds of Java and .Net jobs. Many of these jobs do not include the Iseries either. I guess I better start rehearsing, "Do you want fries with that?"

Here in Europe, the demand for iSeries jobs versus Java / .NET / SAP / Oracle is roughly about the same for all types, that is 1 to 20. Yes, 20 Java or 20 Oracle jobs asked for every 1 iSeries job.

I advocate a long time the death of the iSeries, but the current 1931 like world wide financial crisis will hasten it's demise. Oh, and don't give me that crap of constantly rebooting windows servers and resource hogging java applications. In the paste decade, I've had my fair share of (someone else) monolithic RPG spaghetti code needing never ending tweaking and fixing that the maintenance cost alone was motive enough to rewrite and migrate it to another platforms.
