No NSFDB2 for System i in Domino 8

COMMON's Leadership and Advocacy group has sent COMMON members an exploratory note on IBM's decision not to release "the long anticipated support for Notes databases in DB2 on i5/OS" in the latest release of Lotus Notes/Domino 8.0.

"As part of COMMON's Leadership and Advocacy initiative, we are working on a formal response to IBM, but we want your reaction to this decision to determine how it will affect COMMON members," the COMMON note says.

To give your feedback, COMMON posted a quick, three-question survey that asks these questions:

  • "Do you use Domino on your System i?"
  • "Will IBM's decision to NOT include NSFDB2 for System i in Domino 8.0 affect your business?"
  • "How will your business be affected? Will your development project(s) be delayed but continue with Domino on i5/OS? Will you have to re-deploy Domino on another platform?"

Everyone should also check out the Domino Blog for further commentary on NSFDB2 for Domino on i5/OS as well as the future of Domino on i5/OS in general.

This is IBM's statement on both issues, in response to the various conversations being held of late.

I'm not a Common member, but here's some feedback anyway:

1. Do you use Domino on your System i
-Yes, for the past 7 years, migrating 3 times to faster boxes.

2. Will IBM's decision to NOT include NSFDB2 for System i in Domino 8.0 affect your business?
-Yes, but more likely my hoped development direction

3. How will your business be affected?

-We will need to re-evaluate the integration we thought we were working toward. As a result of the seeming direction we did not invest in tools like LEI. We anticipated composite System i/Domino applications on the horizon that would leverage the best of each platform.

4. Will your development project(s) be delayed but continue with Domino on i5/OS?

-anticipated development projects are certainly delayed. We will continue with Domino on System i though consider other options too (LEI, deploying on Windows)

Will you have to re-deploy Domino on another platform?
-not "re-deploy" but perhaps add to our infrastructure a Windows server.
