Ross Mauri Chat Transcript Ready

The transcript to yesterday's iSociety fireside chat with Ross Mauri, IBM's GM of Power Systems, is now ready.* Mauri kicked off his comments with a little buttering up to the participants, noting, "I still consider myself a newbie, especially when it comes to the long technical history that most of you all have with IBM i." Of course, he did bring up more interesting points.

For instance, he mentioned that IBM has completed its first round of worldwide blade education of Business Partners, which IBM expects will pay off in 2009. The delivery of some additional blade-related customer requirements such as support for virtual tape and new disk options such as RAID on the BladeCenter S won't hurt either.

There's more, of course, in the transcript!

*Note: Thanks go to Trevor Perry for cranking the transcript out so quickly!

It appears that the link to Ross Mauri's transcript is broken.

Mauri did not say much. It sure would be good if we could use SATA drives in the BC-S. That way you could do an online save to a 1.x TB SATA drive, instead of having to use the lower capacity SAS drives for online saves.

regarding PHP on i. Is there value add in deploying a PHP app on IBM i vs Linux? What about morphing RPG to include PHP language features? That way programmers could reuse their PHP and RPG code and skills interchangably.

Is Mauri in charge of IBM i V6R2? What features will be in that release? MSFT is demoing VS2010 and Windows 7. I would like IBM to disclose what it has in the works for IBM i.

The important question is how much is IBM investing in core IBM i features. I suspect, other than virtualization, the answer is zero. The decent thing for IBM to do is open source IBM i so it has a chance to survive.

I think the following is the most important question for the System i community. I like the answer.

Question from Pravinjose: one straight fwd question: which among the three is favorite OS of IBM among the three?

Ross Mauri says: come on ... I told you all that we have 3 tier one operating systems for Power. I said that and I meant it ... and I love all my children equally :-) ... and I really think you all want choice.
