Craig Johnson Dies in Car Accident in Iowa

We just learned that Craig Johnson, IBM's Power Systems software product manager for IBM i, PHP, and MySQL, died in a car crash due to snow and low visibility conditions on Iowa's highways.

We believe the crash occurred yesterday, but from existing news stories and accident reports, the timing and circumstances aren't yet clear. Some of Craig's colleagues, however, were able to confirm Craig's passing, though no details have yet been officially reported.*

Craig was an amazing professional, always willing to take the time with System iNEWS to help share the latest details about IBM i and the System i. Over the years, Craig wrote for us, and helped us shape content to deliver great value to our readers and IBM's i-focused customers.

Craig is truly irreplaceable.

Our hearts and minds are with his family.

We will follow up with more detail as we learn it. Here are two links from a local Iowa paper that cover the road conditions and recent crashes (Craig was not named):

*UPDATE: The Rochester Post-Bulletin has a short news story that confirms the accident on Monday: Rochester man killed in 40-car pileup

Craig was a good friend. I have spoken to many IBM colleges already and we are all in shock. Please pray for his wife and two daughters. Craig will be missed.

Craig provided comments in Second Life for our students' Second Life Power Systems designs a few semesters ago. He was a great guy! He will be missed!

This is sad news for anyone who knew Craig. He was friendly, smart, enthusiastic about PHP, and dedicated to empowering the people he met. A truly nice person.

I have had the great opportunity to work with Craig many times since 2002, he was always an amazing person to deal with.

I was shocked to hear about his passing this am via a Tweet, I will miss the opportunity to deal with such an amazing, enthusiastic, and energetic member of the i Team.

My heart and prayers go out to his family and co workers.

I only met Craig for a few hours and his kind personality and sense of humor are what I remember.

Craig was a great guy and this is terrible news. He helped us significantly when I met him in Rochester in June and September of 2004.

It makes me think a little - safety is paramount and we're only here once. Don't drive in blizzards, take a hotel etc ... but we don't. He was way too young to die at 51 when it might have been avoidable.

I attended a conference in Rochester, MN last week, Craig was our host. What a great guy - intelligent, concerned and of great humor. I am shocked. He will be sorely missed in the i Community.

So sad and so sudden. I met Craig a few years ago when I was in Rochester for training and he joined our group for a couple of lunches at IBM. He was a great guy with a great sense of humor. He will be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. RIP Craig.

Craig was more than a Product Manager, he was a believer in IBM i. That is not rare at IBM Rochester. But in the wild world of International IT is can be. And Craig traveled that world spreading the good news like so many of his brethren! He will be missed.

Here is a picture of Craig from our recent conference taken by a partner. This is how I will remember Craig: Smiling, happy and looking forward to the future! Godspeed Craig!

Tragic news indeed for the i community, but of course even more so for his family and friends. Craig was often a voice on the end of a con-call for us, or a rare visitor to Australia's shores, but we appreciate his contribution to the i community and those who work in it. We are all poorer for this event.

A very sad day. I will miss Craig's willingness to help and to assist in the success of the IBM i. He had a passion for the product as an effective business tool. I have enjoyed working with Craig over the Years. My sincere thoughts and prayers of condolences are extended to his loved ones who will miss him the most. I pray that his wife will recover from the accident as well.

Craig will be missed far beyond Rochester. Each year at the ITSO events, IBMers and partners experienced the great personality, humor and professionalism of Craig. We will really miss him, also here in The Netherlands and Belgium.

Let me mention that there are numbers of colleagues even in far-east Japan who are truly missing Craig, for his sincere and honest personality. A huge loss to the i community. May he rest in peace....

Craig will be sorely missed by all those who worked with him in the iSeries family and beyond. Craig always provided a balanced, pragmatic view of our business and evangelized our technology around the world.

My heartfelt sympathy is with his family and the entire Rochester family.
