Tribute to Craig Johnson

If there's one thing that has become instantly clear after the tragic passing of Craig Johnson, IBM's Power Systems software product manager for IBM i, PHP, and MySQL, it's that his touch reached far and wide across the world. For me, Craig was the go-to guy to talk new features and trends for IBM i, and while I caught some of his humor here and there in press briefings, comments from friends and acquaintances repeatedly mention his sense of humor.

I'm sure there's much more to the man than we will ever know.

There's clues, of course. Craig died in a snowy 39-vehicle pileup on Interstate 35 one week ago. In an attempt to rescue his wife, he exited his vehicle and was fatally struck by another vehicle.

Despite the risk and danger, this is what men do. I only know Craig in one context, really, and yet, in one sentence I understand that his last act was that of a man who's got your back.

Others know pieces and parts, too, and they know his work for the IBM i community worldwide. And yet, I'm guessing that at home Craig may not have spent much time talking up his accomplishments, the importance of his work, and the ways he helped out people and organizations.

So let's do that. Let's take a moment and jot down a memory, a description, an anecdote about Craig. We'll use some of the comments to create a page in our print magazine, take the virtual bits and bytes and place them among the same pages that Craig helped shape for so many years.

One of my favorite Craig Johnson quotes came from a Power5 Server article:

"It's about getting those people to do stuff besides babysitting a server farm."

No matter how long the meeting or dense the topic, Craig always had a little smirk grin that made you think he was in on a good secret. Every interaction I had with him makes me believe he did know a secret, and he is experiencing the full joy of that today.

Craig was a hero. He always came to the rescue. I was in Austin for a briefing surrounded by AIX guys, being forced to drink the AIX Kool Aid all day. Then Craig came in, a beacon of light in a dark AIX world. He will always be special to me.

I will see you again one day my friend.

Craig was always interested in making sure his message was clear and accurate. Then he wanted to make sure that he injected some kind of humor into his presentations. We laughed at all the things we left in and laughed harder at the things we did not leave in.

Craig was a friend to anyone in the i community. He was never too busy to answer any question, regardless of how simple it might seem to him! This community has lost a friend. Praying for Kathy and their family.

Craig, all of the IBM i family is missing you... you were one of the finest colleagues I ever had a chance to work in my 32 years at IBM. I already am saying things like “How would you have done this?” or “How would you explain this?” Your approach to life and work will remain one of unique quality, spirit, joy and laughter for all of us to reflect on. You will not be forgotten.

Craig you will be sadly missed. Your sense of humor and the way in which you made the i shine in your presentations was second to none. This surely is sad news for the i community, although joyous to have known such a person.

Craig, you will always be in our memories.

Craig was not only this wonderfully great person to be around, but also this incredible 'let's do-it' sponge. He was always there. I am still trying to envision the three people that it will take to replace him. We miss him. Eric

Craig was also a wonderful, trusted resource to the ISVs whose solutions run on Power i. They loved his honesty and quick wit. I remember a past ISV Advisory Council meeting when it was Craig's turn to deliver the product update. Someone accidentally spilled an entire cup of coffee into his keyboard ruining his laptop. He grabbed an IBMer's like model, quickly swapped out the hard drive and without missing a beat said...."And the GOOD News is..." He got a standing ovation for that presentation.

My fondest story from Craig was about dirt... "you can't get rid of it, you can only move it". Craig's been moved...he went home. This fine man who touched so many, is already truly missed. My thoughts and prayers are to Craig's family.

Deepest sympathy to the wife, children, family & friends of Craig. I'd met Craig through the Business Partner community and he was a Phenomenal advocate of IBM Power Systems. His sense of humor and professionalism will be truly missed!
